abstract

isolated dissection of the superior mesenteric artery is a rare occurrence with a hitherto unknown exact etiology. patients may present with abdominal symptoms or hemodynamic instability. w e herein present a case of spontaneous isolated superior mesenteric artery dissection in a 48-year-old man, who was admitted with epigastric pain. due to an undiagnosed paced rhythm on the electrocardiogram, he was given fibrinolysis treatment for acute myocardial infarction. on further evaluation, angiography revealed that the cause of pain was the dissection of the superior mesenteric artery. the patient’s symptoms were diminished with conservative management, obviating the need for the angioplasty of the superior mesenteric artery.

Spontaneous Isolated Superior Mesenteric Artery Dissection

A true isolated superior mesenteric artery (SMA) dissection is a rare occurrence. The increasing use of diagnostic imaging studies has resulted in this rare disease being more recognized. A 68-year-old Caucasian female presented with sharp upper abdominal pain. Computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen showed dissection with thrombosis in the proximal SMA. Conservative management with bowel rest,...

Superior mesenteric artery dissection.

DESCRIPTION A 61-year-old man presented with a 2-day history of epigastralgia and back pain without nausea, vomiting, haematemesis or melena. He reported that he had untreated hypertension. On examination, his upper extremity blood pressures were 180/100 (right arm) and 177/98 mm Hg (left arm). His abdomen was soft and flat, but showed epigastric tenderness without rebound tenderness or muscle ...

Conservative management of isolated dissection of the superior mesenteric artery.

A 46-year-old man with a previous history of smoking (20 cig./day) was referred because of recurrent episodes of sudden high periumbilical abdominal pain. Upon examination, pain in the periumbilical region was found without peritoneal irritation sings. Blood pressure raised to 180/71 mm Hg. Hemogram, biochemistry, and venous blood gas analysis were strictly normal. On abdominal angio-TC (Fig. 1...

Spontaneous isolated superior mesenteric artery dissection - Report of two cases.

Two cases of isolated superior mesenteric artery dissection diagnosed by contrast enhanced 64 slice CT are reported. In both, the dissection was seen extending along the entire length of the artery with one of them showing partially thrombosed false lumen. One case was associated with dissection of left renal artery with consequent renal infarcts. Although superior mesenteric artery dissection ...

Current Understandings of Spontaneous Isolated Superior Mesenteric Artery Dissection

Spontaneous isolated superior mesenteric artery dissection (SISMAD) has been known as a rare vascular disease. However it is increasingly reported in these days with the development of advanced imaging technology. Underlying etiology, natural course or an optimal management strategy of SISMAD is not exactly known at the moment. During the past 10 years, we have had an interest in this rare vasc...
